On Monday, a peaceful protest was held at the Udupi District Collector’s office premises in Manipal, led by the Karnataka Adivasi Rights Coordination Committee, Udupi District Committee. The protest demanded the allocation of land to landless Koraga families in Alur and Harkur villages of the taluk. Hundreds of Koraga community members, leaders of various organizations, and the public participated, urging the completion of the land allocation process that has been pending for about ten years.
The Udupi District Collector met with the protesting delegation and discussed the matter in detail. He stated that he has complete information regarding the land case of the Koraga families in Alur village and assured that a meeting of all concerned departments will be held soon to take a final decision. The petition submitted to the District Collector demanded the allocation of 10.67 acres of land in Alur and Harkur villages to 13 landless Koraga families.
The organization also urged for the immediate possession of land sanctioned in 1984-85 to be provided to the original beneficiaries and the rejection of the objection raised by the Karnataka Cashew Development Corporation. The protest saw the participation of Sridhar Nada, Krishna Inna, and Ganesh Alur, among others. The District Collector’s assurance has brought hope to the landless Koraga families, who have been waiting for a decade for a resolution to their land allocation case.
