Mangaluru, 23 August 2026 – The Tulu Wikipedia project celebrated its ten‑year anniversary of the live site, which first went public in August 2016.
To honour the milestone, the Karavali Wikimedians User Group has scheduled a two‑day event at the AJ Grand Hotel in Mangaluru on 12 and 13 September. Group president Dr Vishwanath Badikana announced the programme at a press briefing on Saturday, outlining plans for the next phase of the platform.
Beyond expanding article count, the initiative now focuses on recording Tulunadu’s living heritage and indigenous knowledge. Traditional practices such as Ati Kalanja and Suggi Kunitha are being documented, with the group urging practitioners to share their expertise. Financial aid is also being offered to support the preservation of these customs.
The Tulu Wikipedia began as a concept in 2008 and spent almost eight years in the Wikimedia incubator before its official launch, becoming the 23rd Indian‑language edition of Wikipedia. Today the site hosts more than 3,800 articles that span history, art, science and everyday life.
Volunteer contributors continue to write and edit entries, gather photographs, verify sources and add citations. Dr Badikana highlighted the early guidance of Dr U.B. Pavanaja, who mentored a core team that included Prof. B.A. Viveka Rai, Prof. A.V. Navada, K.P. Rao, Vamana Nandavara and Dr Kishore Kumar Rai Sheni.
The forthcoming celebration will provide a forum for scholars, cultural custodians and Wikimedia enthusiasts to discuss future directions, strengthen community ties and reinforce the digital preservation of the Tulu language.
