On a significant day for medical advancements in Konaje, doctors at K. S. Hegde Charitable Hospital successfully performed robotic Whipple surgery on a 57-year-old patient suffering from pancreatic cancer. The patient had been admitted with symptoms of abdominal pain, jaundice, and weight loss, and was examined by Dr. Chandrashekar Sorake, Head of the Department of Medical Gastroenterology and Hepatology. A comprehensive review by a multidisciplinary team of specialist doctors from various departments confirmed the patient had advanced pancreatic cancer. The team decided to administer chemotherapy to reduce the tumor size before surgery, under the guidance of Medical Oncologist Dr. Vijith Shetty. The patient received four rounds of chemotherapy, and a subsequent PET scan showed a significant reduction in the size of the pancreatic cancer. Following this, the patient underwent Whipple surgery, a complex procedure involving the removal of a part of the pancreas, small intestine, bile duct, and a portion of the stomach. The surgery was performed using the state-of-the-art Da Vinci surgical robotic system, with the robotic surgical team including Dr. Santhosh Kumar K. Y. and Dr. Praveen Kumar R. Bhat. The surgery lasted approximately 9 hours, with minimal blood loss, and was managed by a team of skilled nurses and support staff. The patient recovered quickly, thanks to excellent nursing care, and was discharged from the hospital within a week.
