On Sunday night and Monday morning, strong winds and rain caused widespread damage across Udupi district, affecting over 10 houses and other properties, with estimated losses running into lakhs of rupees. Around 10 am on Monday, the roof of the government higher primary school in Brahmavar was blown away by strong winds, injuring a student. The student was immediately taken to the hospital and treated. The education department officials visited the school and inspected the damage.
The strong winds and rain also caused damage to several houses in Kundapura and Byndoor taluks. In Delattu, Beluru, the house of Anandaram Adiga was completely destroyed, with four areca nut trees uprooted, resulting in an estimated loss of over Rs 50,000. In Gujjadi, the house of Manjunath Acharya was partially damaged, with an estimated loss of Rs 30,000.
In Amparu, the house of Koragappa Kanchan was damaged when a tree fell on it, resulting in an estimated loss of Rs 20,000. Similar incidents were reported in Karkunje, Hardalli, and other areas, with estimated losses ranging from Rs 20,000 to Rs 50,000. The heavy rain and strong winds also caused damage to areca nut plantations, with over 75 trees damaged in Siddapura, resulting in an estimated loss of over Rs 50,000.
The Udupi district received an average of 45.3 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, with Kundapura receiving the highest rainfall of 71.7 mm. The district administration has advised the public to take necessary precautions and to report any damage or losses to the authorities. The municipality has been criticized for not taking adequate measures to clear the drains and canals, resulting in waterlogging on the roads.
