Gurugram Commissioner Sibash Kabiraj confirmed on Tuesday, September 15, that Kalyan Bainsla, the driver accused of striking a woman on a sports bike, was taken into custody in Rajgarh, Rajasthan. The arrest follows the addition of an attempt to murder charge under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, a provision that allows imprisonment for up to ten years.
Bainsla, a gym owner who describes himself as an international Kabaddi player, denied deliberately hitting the rider identified as Shivani Chauhan, also known as Sia. In a statement on Monday, September 14, he claimed he was unaware the motorcyclist was a woman and merely asked her to reduce speed. He admitted a collision occurred but said he fled the scene fearing a mob attack.
The driver alleged that around twenty to twenty‑two motorcyclists were speeding past him, while Sia was travelling at 140‑160 km per hour. He said she turned without checking mirrors near a U‑turn, causing him to lose control of his car. “It was my fault; I admit it,” he added.
After the impact, Bainsla said he initially instructed his brother to stop, but later changed his mind after other bikers allegedly hurled abuses. Concern for his family’s safety, he said, prevented him from remaining at the spot. He also mentioned that he has no prior criminal record and has deactivated his Instagram account amid the controversy.
Sia responded with another video, questioning why Bainsla did not stop after the crash and alleging that the attack was aimed at a woman biker. She highlighted two videos that show the car striking her bike and then fleeing, calling for stricter road safety measures for women in Delhi and Gurugram.
The incident, captured by an Instagram user @youknowabhishek_, shows the driver signalling Sia to halt before steering his vehicle into her bike. Sia, a Delhi resident with a fashion design background, also contested the 2022 municipal elections from Kalkaji. Her father, Roshan Chauhan, is a member of the Aam Aadmi Party.
