On September 25, retired Deputy Superintendent of Police Thacharakala Kannoth Mohammed Sharief will be required to report to the Assistant Electoral Registration Officer at the Mangaluru City Corporation office in Lalbagh between 9 AM and 12 PM, as per a notice issued by the Election Commission.
The notice, dated September 14, cites Sharief's involvement in the Special Incident Report (SIR) process and asks him to appear at the specified time. It does not list any particular documents that he must bring.
Sharief, now 82, spent more than three decades in law enforcement. His postings included Sub‑Inspector roles in Raichur, Ballari and Gulbarga; both Sub‑Inspector and Circle Inspector duties in Tumakuru; Circle Inspector in Mulki; and finally Deputy Superintendent of Police in Udupi, Mangaluru City and Karwar, from where he retired in 2003.
He asserts that his voting record stretches back to 1966 in Kerala and to 1971 in Karnataka, covering Lok Sabha, Vidhan Sabha, Vidhan Parishad and local body elections. Recent correspondence, however, indicates a mismatch in his name, though the notice offers no explanation.
Expressing frustration, Sharief highlighted his long public service and senior‑citizen status, suggesting that authorities could have visited him to resolve the discrepancy rather than requiring him to travel at his age.
The situation remains unresolved, with the former officer awaiting further clarification from the election officials.
