On Friday, September 18, families of Kunchepu Ganesh, 24, and Deshaboi Sampah, 25, travelled to the District Congress Party office in Hyderabad to request state help after the two men were taken into custody in Doha.
Both hailing from Nirmal district of Telangana, Ganesh comes from Rampur village in Narsapur mandal while Sampah is a resident of Madapur in Son mandal. They have been employed by Aqua Clean Facilities Services in Qatar for roughly two and a half years.
According to a report submitted to the state NRI Advisory Committee, Qatari police detained the pair in August after observing them using mobile phones at a site where such devices are strictly prohibited. The allegation prompted the committee member Sandeep from Ponkal to raise the issue with the committee.
Seeking intervention, the families approached District Congress Party in‑charge Kuchadi Srihari Rao. Rao subsequently discussed the case with Mandha Bheem Reddy, vice‑chairman of the state NRI Committee, and conveyed the details to the authorities in hopes of securing legal aid and facilitating the workers' return to India.
The incident underscores the challenges faced by migrant labourers from coastal Karnataka and surrounding regions who work in the Gulf under strict workplace regulations. While Qatar has tightened its oversight of foreign workers, families often rely on political representatives to navigate diplomatic channels.
Local officials have yet to comment on the progress of the legal proceedings, but the families remain hopeful that coordinated efforts between the state NRI Committee and the Indian embassy in Doha will lead to a swift resolution.
