Hyderabad, October 22, 2026: A domestic dispute in Hyderabad's Filmnagar area took a violent turn on October 20, when a woman reported that her brother-in-law allegedly bit her during an argument centered on dowry. Sowmya, the complainant, subsequently approached the Filmnagar Police, naming both her husband, Vinay Kumar, and his brother, Suresh Kumar, in her formal statement.
Sowmya's detailed complaint outlines a physical assault where Suresh Kumar reportedly bit her on her hands and legs during the heated confrontation. The incident, according to police, is the culmination of ongoing tensions within the household. Filmnagar Police Inspector A Ramesh provided further insight, confirming that the couple had been engaged in persistent quarrels over dowry for several days leading up to the October 20 altercation. 'Suresh Kumar became involved in the argument on that day and proceeded to bite Sowmya,' Inspector Ramesh stated, recounting the sequence of events.
Based on Sowmya's allegations, law enforcement officials have registered a case under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The charges invoked include harassment for dowry, specifically addressed by Section 85, and causing hurt, as defined under Section 115 of the new legislation. This legal action initiates a formal process to investigate the gravity of the accusations.
Inspector Ramesh further informed Karavali Times that a thorough investigation into the allegations is actively progressing. While the inquiry is underway, police plan to issue official notices to both Vinay Kumar and Suresh Kumar, compelling their cooperation. As of October 22, authorities have not made any arrests in connection with this case. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the deeply entrenched issue of dowry-related violence that continues to affect families, despite societal and legal efforts to curb such practices.
