The South Kanara Association (SKA) London recently celebrated its traditional Monthi Fest at Alperton Community School, Stanley Avenue, gathering Mangalurean families and community members from across London to honour their heritage. The day-long event seamlessly blended faith, devotion, and cultural expressions, commencing with a vibrant family photo session where attendees proudly showcased traditional attire at the main entrance.
A colourful procession followed for the Fula Ushayche, the cherished flower offering ceremony. Children joyfully presented fresh flowers to Mother Mary, a poignant display reinforcing the community's commitment to preserving Mangalurean traditions among its younger generation. The spiritual heart of the morning was a solemn Konkani Mass, celebrated by Fr. Jason Pais, during which the blessed Novem (new corn) was distributed to the congregation. Fr. Valerian Castelino, though unable to attend the Mass, later joined the afternoon festivities, both priests receiving special appreciation for their spiritual guidance. Altar service was diligently provided by Stacy D'Sa, Liana D'Sa, Freya Dias, Scarlett Vaz, Viaan Tauro, and Jewel D'Souza, with the SKA Choir leading the hymns, Carlos Fernandes managing sound, and Ying capturing the moments through photography.
Following the sacred rituals, families and friends convened for a traditional Mangalurean Noven Jewan, a harvest meal meticulously prepared and served by dedicated cooking and kitchen volunteers. This communal lunch fostered fellowship before an afternoon cultural programme. The stage then came alive with performances by children and adults from various SKA London wards, featuring diverse dance forms that underscored the community's vibrant cultural spirit and passion for heritage preservation. The festivities culminated in a lively traditional Baila dance, drawing participants of all ages to the dance floor for a joyful conclusion.
SKA London extended heartfelt gratitude to all who contributed, including numerous main, platinum, and other sponsors, alongside dedicated cooking and kitchen volunteers, whose generous support made the successful celebration possible.
