On July 10-11, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Auckland, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to New Zealand in nearly 40 years. Members of the Indian diaspora in New Zealand are eager to welcome him, describing the occasion as historic. The community expects the visit to strengthen India-New Zealand relations, deepen people-to-people ties, and provide fresh momentum to the proposed Free Trade Agreement and broader economic cooperation. Several members of the diaspora expressed hope that the visit would open new avenues for trade, investment, and cultural exchanges. One member said the proposed Free Trade Agreement marks the beginning of a stronger partnership between New Zealand and India. Another community member echoed similar sentiments, saying stronger trade ties between the two countries will benefit both sides and create new opportunities for businesses and people. The Indian community is extremely excited and happy about Prime Minister Modi’s visit, with tremendous enthusiasm and energy among people across Auckland. Prime Minister Modi began his three-nation tour on Monday, arriving in Indonesia, and will also visit Australia before concluding his tour in New Zealand. The visit is expected to further India’s Act East Policy and advance its vision while reinforcing India’s commitment to a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region. Prime Minister Modi will meet New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon to build on the momentum generated by Luxon’s visit to India in March this year.
