Mumbai, 13 September 2026 – Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that the Uniform Civil Code will be introduced in all 21 states governed by BJP‑led NDA administrations before the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
Speaking to reporters alongside Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Shah highlighted the government's record over the past 12 years and the 25‑year journey of the BJP under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He pointed out that the practice of triple talaq has been abolished, granting Muslim women equal rights, and said the UCC has already been implemented in several states. “We are confident that the remaining NDA‑ruled states will adopt the code before 2029,” he asserted.
Shah also touched upon reforms in the criminal justice system, citing the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and a reported 30 per cent rise in conviction rates in some states within a single year. A new mechanism, he said, aims to deliver justice within three years.
On national security, the minister claimed that the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A was achieved without bloodshed and that Kashmir is now fully integrated with India. He noted the end of five decades of Naxalism and the signing of more than 14 peace accords in the North‑East, where over 9,000 insurgents have surrendered.
Regarding the National Register of Citizens in Manipur, Shah said the Centre is in talks with allies and state parties, and a decision will be communicated later.
When asked about the detection of illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators, he declined to reveal the methods, warning that public disclosure would compromise the operation. He reiterated the resolve to deport every illegal entrant, one by one.
Shah also announced the launch of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, an anti‑drug campaign that will involve visits to every state and a full‑day meeting with chief ministers to ensure grassroots reach.
