Police in Indore recovered the body of a 25‑day‑old bride from a water tank outside her home on Thursday, raising questions of foul play in the Nehru Nagar neighbourhood of Rau.
The deceased has been identified as Vandana Kushwaha, according to official records. Neighbours, alarmed after hearing a scream from the house, called the authorities and later reported bloodstains on the shirt of her husband, Upendra Patel. Officers arrived, located the tank and retrieved the lifeless body, which has now been sent for post‑mortem examination.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Nidhi Saxena said preliminary observations suggest murder, but the exact cause of death will be confirmed only after the autopsy. Both Patel and his brother have been taken into custody for questioning.
Vandana and Patel, who had lived together in Nehru Nagar before moving to a rented flat in Rajnagar, married on 11 August after a love relationship. Police reports indicate that Patel struggled with substance addiction, prompting the couple to shift residences. Family members later filed a missing‑person report at Chandan Nagar police station; Vandana, an adult, had expressed her desire to stay with Patel despite family concerns.
According to investigators, frequent quarrels over the husband’s addiction were reported by relatives. The incident unfolded when neighbours heard a scream, saw Patel emerge with blood on his clothing, and noted a prolonged silence thereafter. When no further activity was observed, they alerted the police.
The post‑mortem report is expected to provide crucial evidence regarding the manner of death. Authorities have assured that further legal action will be taken based on the autopsy findings and the evidence gathered during the investigation.
