Karnataka Minister for Bengaluru Development Krishna Byre Gowda launched a citywide clearance drive in Bengaluru on Saturday to remove abandoned vehicles from public roads and footpaths. The drive, undertaken by the Greater Bengaluru Authority and the Bengaluru Traffic Police, aims to tackle the growing menace of abandoned vehicles in the city. Former Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao was also present at the launch. The initiative follows the pasting of notices on abandoned vehicles last week, giving owners a seven-day deadline to remove them. With the deadline now over, authorities have begun towing vehicles whose owners failed to respond.

According to Krishna Byre Gowda, abandoned vehicles have become a significant civic nuisance, affecting lakhs of residents and spoiling the city’s appearance. The minister stated that authorities had identified vehicles abandoned on roads and footpaths and initiated the clearance operation after following due legal procedures. The towed vehicles will be stored at GBA premises for 15 days, and public notices will be issued through newspapers before any further action is taken.

The Bengaluru Traffic Police have identified 2,751 abandoned vehicles across the city, while citizens reported 1,498 such vehicles through the Astram App, taking the total number of identified abandoned vehicles to 4,249 over the past 15 days. Notices have been pasted on 1,034 vehicles so far, with owners of 72 vehicles already paying fines and reclaiming their vehicles. The minister emphasized the need to preserve public spaces and urged citizens to respect public roads and footpaths.
