On Monday, Meta-owned WhatsApp launched global reservations of usernames in New Delhi, aiming to bolster user privacy by protecting phone numbers. This feature allows individuals to create and reserve a unique username, which will be available in-app later this year. Users will be notified in the app once reservations become available. According to WhatsApp, choosing a username should be a unique identifier that only desired contacts will know. The platform emphasizes that usernames are a privacy feature, not a social media handle, and do not include a directory to browse or suggestions. This means that users must know the exact username to initiate contact. WhatsApp highlights that usernames will enable users to share a unique identifier instead of their phone number, adding an extra layer of protection. To further control who can message them, users can set up a 'username key', requiring first-time messengers to use the key to reach them. This key can be changed at any time. The introduction of username reservations follows last week's announcement that CRED founder Kunal Shah will join Meta as WhatsApp's next global CEO, along with Meta's investment of around $900 million in CRED.
