On Monday evening in Moodbidri, Union Minister for Education and Consumer Affairs Prahlad Joshi officially opened the Alva's Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, commonly known as Alva's Medical College, situated within the Smt. Shobha Mohan Alva Campus.
The new institution, a state‑of‑the‑art medical college, offers undergraduate MBBS seats, postgraduate specialties and a fully equipped research wing. Its campus spreads over several acres, featuring modern lecture halls, simulation labs, a teaching hospital and residential facilities for students and faculty.
Addressing a gathering of dignitaries, local doctors and students, Joshi highlighted the strategic advantage of Dakshina Kannada district. He asserted that the region possesses the infrastructure, talent pool and coastal connectivity required to evolve into a world‑class medical hub, attracting patients and researchers from abroad.
The minister also pointed to recent government initiatives that aim to boost healthcare education and research across Karnataka. By linking the college with existing hospitals in Mangalore and Udupi, he envisaged a network that could support advanced clinical trials, tele‑medicine services and international collaborations.
Local authorities welcomed the announcement, noting that the inauguration marks a milestone for the district’s socio‑economic development. With the college now operational, students from coastal Karnataka will have access to high‑quality medical training without leaving the state, while the broader community stands to benefit from improved healthcare services and increased employment opportunities.
