From Siachen to the Sea: Armed Forces Mark International Yoga Day Across India
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh joined air warriors in Shillong on Sunday to lead the armed forces' observance of the 12th International Day of Yoga, with events stretching from the Siachen Glacier to naval vessels at sea. Singh, accompanied by Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh, participated in a session hosted by the Eastern Air Command. "Celebrating the International Yoga Day at Eastern Air Command in Shillong. I urge everyone to make Yoga an integral part of their lives," the minister posted on X, sharing a video of the event.
Chief of Defence Staff General N.S. Raja Subramani led celebrations at the National War Memorial in Delhi, organised by the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff. In Tezpur, Assam, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi performed yoga alongside troops. A senior official said his participation in the Eastern theatre underscored the Army's focus on fitness, resilience and operational readiness across all conditions.
The Army described how soldiers performed yoga in diverse and challenging locations. "From the icy heights of Siachen Glacier to the southern tip at Kanyakumari; from the land of the rising sun in the northeast to the vast expanse of the Rann of Kutch, soldiers performed yoga," the Army posted on X, reaffirming their commitment to physical fitness and mental well-being.
In Delhi Cantonment, the Army hosted a large gathering at the Cariappa Parade Ground. Vice Chief of Army Staff Lt.-General Dhiraj Seth joined over 3,500 participants, including personnel, families, veterans, NCC cadets and civilians. Defence attaches from more than 17 countries attended, highlighting yoga's global appeal. This year's theme, "Yoga for Healthy Ageing," promoted the practice for all ages.
