Udupi: This Wednesday, Tanveer Sait, Chairman of the Karnataka Legislature's Committee for Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare, urged officials to ensure a supportive academic environment in residential schools and student hostels across Udupi district. Presiding over a progress review meeting at the Dr. V.S. Acharya Auditorium within the District Panchayat office in Manipal's Rajatadri, Sait underscored the profound trust parents place in these institutions, expecting their children to receive quality education and become employable.

Sait highlighted Udupi's status as a premier educational hub, attracting numerous students from outside the district. He noted the growing enrollment in residential facilities and the district's commendable academic results. To sustain and enhance this success, he directed officials to proactively address any shortcomings in infrastructure or maintenance. "Departments must focus on building minds, not just buildings," Sait stated, stressing that while errors are natural, officials must prevent them from undermining student welfare.

The committee chairman also addressed the increasing demand for hostel accommodations, with complaints about seat shortages. He directed officials to expand capacity to meet student needs. Essential amenities like clean drinking water, hot water, nutritious meals, hygiene, and soap kits must be consistently provided. Sait further pointed out the scarcity of staff, including wardens, night guards, cooks, and assistants, urging immediate steps to fill these crucial positions. When constructing new hostels, he emphasized the necessity of planning for adequate lighting, fans, hot water provisions, and full staffing.

Legislative Council Member Keshava Prasad S suggested identifying key factors contributing to the district's strong academic performance. He also called for an assessment of whether government schemes effectively reach minority communities beyond Muslims and Christians. Assembly Member Channabasappa advocated for additional facilities for students, particularly those from North Karnataka and other districts, and proposed building more hostels in districts experiencing high student influx for education. H.A. Iqbal Hussain, another Assembly Member, reinforced that superior facilities directly lead to higher student enrollment in residential schools and hostels.
