Rahul Gandhi, Congress leader, and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman exchanged sharp messages on X on Wednesday, each defending their stance on the ongoing leadership tussle at the Tata Group.
Gandhi accused the conglomerate of being “criminally destroyed” and said no business leader dared to speak up. He also asked why a “legal and commercial matter” forced Tata Trusts and Tata Sons to be hosted at Home Minister Amit Shah’s residence, and queried when “crony number 1” would appear and which parts of Tata he would claim.
The remarks came as Tata Sons’ boardroom remains divided over the succession of its chairmanship, a dispute that has already split trustees.
Sitharaman replied that Gandhi was trying to mobilise entrepreneurs to spread distrust, urging him to stop “politicising” every issue. She reminded that the Modi government values industry as a source of jobs and growth, and that its policies aim to foster enterprise and attract investment.
The finance minister also criticised the Congress for historically stifling entrepreneurship through the so‑called Licence‑Quota Raj, claiming the party had inflicted poverty on millions.
Sitharaman emphasized that the Constitution and the courts guarantee justice, and warned Gandhi against casting baseless accusations that undermine the judiciary.
In a follow‑up X post, Gandhi pressed for answers, repeating his two questions about the Shah residence and the identity of the alleged crony.
