The Samajwadi Party (SP) has declared its recent performance in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections a significant indicator of public sentiment, particularly after securing crucial victories in Varanasi. The party, led by Akhilesh Yadav, asserted that these results offer a glimpse into the likely outcome of the 2027 Assembly elections.

In the latest round of polls for 11 Legislative Council seats, the SP emerged victorious in five, bolstering its previous strength by two additional seats. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured the remaining six seats, thereby retaining its pre-election tally.

A notable outcome saw the Samajwadi Party clinch both the Teachers' and Graduates' constituencies in Varanasi. This victory carries particular weight as Varanasi serves as the Lok Sabha constituency represented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

SP spokesperson Fakhrul Hasan Chand, speaking to IANS, attributed the BJP's setbacks to elections conducted via ballot papers, alleging attempts by the ruling party to influence the process in certain areas. "When elections were held through ballot papers, the BJP lost. They tried to stop the Varanasi results; however, they were not able to stop the public from expressing their stand," Chand stated, challenging the BJP to explain its Varanasi defeat instead of focusing on other parties' misfortunes.

Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya acknowledged the unexpected nature of the SP's win in Varanasi. "The Samajwadi Party has opened its account where it was not expected," Maurya commented, adding that the BJP would thoroughly examine the reasons behind the outcome.

SP chief Akhilesh Yadav also weighed in on the results via social media platform X, celebrating the victory of the PDA, a political grouping promoted by his party. Yadav claimed the BJP suffered a 'moral defeat' in Gorakhpur despite alleged 'scheming,' and urged party workers to ensure proof of victory in Banaras, stating, "The MLC elections have packed off the BJP's bag and baggage."
