Uttar Pradesh Congress President Aradhana 'Mona' Misra declared on Thursday that the recent Legislative Council election outcomes signal a public rejection of the BJP, labeling them a 'semi-final for 2027' ahead of crucial Assembly polls. Speaking from Lucknow, Misra asserted that the mandate decisively goes 'against' the ruling party.
The latest round of Legislative Council elections saw the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party (SP) make notable gains, securing five of the eleven contested seats. The BJP, meanwhile, retained six seats. While the BJP maintained its pre-election strength, the SP significantly improved its position by adding two seats to its previous tally.
A particularly striking outcome emerged from Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Lok Sabha constituency, where the Samajwadi Party clinched both the Teachers' and Graduates' constituencies. Misra highlighted this specific defeat, stating, 'The Prime Minister's Lok Sabha constituency is Varanasi, where the BJP has suffered a major defeat in the MLC elections. This is a mandate against the BJP.'
Emphasizing the anti-BJP sentiment across Uttar Pradesh, Misra attributed the voter discontent to several critical issues. 'Graduates' and Teachers' constituency voters are troubled by unemployment and job losses,' she explained, further citing inflation, law and order concerns, farmers' problems, and atrocities against women as factors influencing the electorate. 'A strong mandate against the BJP has emerged in the MLC elections. I would say this is the semi-final for 2027,' Misra reiterated.
Adding to the criticism, SP spokesperson Fakhrul Hasan Chand claimed the results demonstrate the BJP's struggles in ballot paper elections. He alleged that the ruling party attempted to influence the process, slowing down voting and misusing administrative power in certain areas, including efforts to obstruct the Varanasi results. Chand challenged the BJP to address its defeat in Varanasi rather than deriving satisfaction from Congress's setbacks elsewhere, predicting these results foreshadow the 2027 Assembly elections.
