On Monday, a disturbing incident unfolded in Davangere district, Karnataka, as two brothers, Manjunath and Venkatesh, exhumed their mother’s decomposed body, 79 days after her burial, and transported it to a hospital on a motorcycle, alleging that her death was a murder, not a suicide. The incident occurred in Adapur village, Harihar taluk, and has generated widespread concern. The brothers’ mother, Eeramma, 58, was found hanging at her residence on April 29, and after a preliminary post-mortem examination at Malebennur Hospital, doctors concluded it was a suicide, leading to her last rites being performed. However, the family and villagers had lingering doubts about Eeramma’s death. The brothers claim their mother was involved in a dispute over a box drain construction with several relatives and accuse around 10 individuals of assaulting and murdering her before hanging her body to make it appear as a suicide. They point to visible injury marks on her body and claim they had approached the Malebennur Police repeatedly, seeking a fresh investigation and a second post-mortem examination. The brothers believe a fresh medical examination can reveal the truth about their mother’s death. Alleging the initial post-mortem examination was conducted hastily, they claim the police failed to adequately investigate their complaint. Manjunath had filed a complaint against 11 individuals, suspecting foul play in his mother’s death. The brothers dug up their mother’s grave late on Sunday night and wrapped the decomposed remains in a bedsheet, setting out for Davangere District Hospital on a motorcycle to demand a second post-mortem examination. The matter came to light after the motorcycle lost balance near Shamanur Road, and passers-by discovered the bundle contained a human body. Police shifted the remains to the mortuary and registered an FIR against the brothers for exhuming the body without prior approval. Authorities have initiated DNA testing to confirm the identity of the remains, and investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding Eeramma’s death and the allegations made by her sons.
