On Sunday, the Indian Embassy in Vietnam started the process of repatriating the remains of those who died in a tourist boat tragedy near Phu Quoc Island. One injured survivor, Gelle Kishore, is recovering steadily at a government hospital in Vietnam. The embassy has finalized an agency to facilitate the repatriation of the mortal remains of the deceased. The agency will contact the bereaved families on Sunday to obtain necessary authorization for the release and transportation of the remains to India.

The tragedy occurred on Saturday when a tourist boat carrying Indian visitors capsized off Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island, claiming the lives of 15 people, including 10 tourists from Tamil Nadu. The boat was carrying around 32 Indian tourists, including 17 from Tamil Nadu, and the remaining passengers were from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Kerala. The vessel reportedly overturned while cruising in waters south of Phu Quoc, a popular tourist destination in southern Vietnam.

Rescue teams and emergency personnel launched a large-scale rescue operation, pulling several passengers from the water and administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to those found unconscious. Despite the swift response, authorities confirmed that 15 people lost their lives in the accident. The survivors were rescued and provided medical assistance. The Indian Embassy, in coordination with Indian authorities, continues to oversee relief measures and arrangements for the victims’ families as the repatriation process progresses.

The tourists rescued after the accident are scheduled to return to India on Sunday, with flight tickets arranged by the concerned mobile service provider. Team Andhra Pradesh Bhavan is coordinating closely with the Indian Embassy to provide necessary assistance until the safe return of the affected persons and the completion of the repatriation process. Vietnamese authorities have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the boat capsizing.
