On July 9, 2026, in Mangaluru, heavy rains accompanied by strong winds caused significant damage to a government school in Puttur taluk and submerged the Kumaradhara bathing ghat. At the Government Model Higher Primary School in Haradi, strong winds ripped off roof tiles while students were in class on July 7, but fortunately, no one was injured. The school authorities quickly moved the students to a safer location. The school’s compound wall, which had partially collapsed due to continuous rainfall, completely gave way on Wednesday. Officials from the Puttur City Municipal Council and the Education Department inspected the damage. Moderate rainfall continued across Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts on Wednesday, with Mangaluru city experiencing intermittent showers. The India Meteorological Department issued a yellow alert for Dakshina Kannada from July 9 for the next three days, predicting rainfall at isolated places. The Kumaradhara bathing ghat at Kukke Subrahmanya Temple was partially submerged due to heavy rainfall, and temple authorities advised devotees not to enter the river. In Udupi district, strong winds and rain caused damage to houses, plantations, and cattle sheds, with preliminary estimates suggesting a total loss of around Rs 7.17 lakh.
