Dakshina Kannada's Muslim community observed Milad-un-Nabi, the birthday of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), with profound devotion across the district on Tuesday, August 25. Celebrations unfolded with widespread participation, marking the significant occasion with both public gatherings and intimate prayers.
A vibrant procession, known as a Milad rally, wound through public spaces, carrying the Prophet's message to onlookers. Participants enlivened the march with rhythmic daf drums and devotional songs. Scout displays and intricate flower decorations further adorned these public gatherings, adding to the festive atmosphere.
In most madrasas and mosques district-wide, special early morning majlis (gatherings) set the tone for the day. These were followed by flag hoisting ceremonies and public programs held both morning and night, dedicated to disseminating the Prophet's life teachings. Significantly, many locations hosted interfaith harmony events, strengthening bonds among Hindu, Muslim, and Christian residents.
Madrasa students participating in the rallies received sweets and refreshing beverages. As the afternoon arrived, mosques and madrasas distributed elaborate meals, including biryani, ghee rice, and meat dishes served with roti. Families also prepared special feasts in their homes. The Milad-un-Nabi rallies drew a diverse crowd, with children, youth, and senior members all taking part in the heartfelt observances.
The celebrations extend beyond a single day, continuing throughout the Islamic month of Rabi' al-awwal. Sunni Muslims traditionally recite Mawlid (eulogies of the Prophet) in both mosques and private residences. Madrasa children engage in various cultural programs, including song and speech competitions centered on their love for the Prophet, with prizes awarded to participants. These month-long activities culminate in special events held specifically on the 12th day of Rabi' al-awwal.
