On June 15, in New Delhi, Meta-owned WhatsApp released a detailed set of FAQs to address concerns surrounding its new username feature. This move comes after the Centre issued a notice to Meta, flagging potential risks of fraud and impersonation, and warning against rolling out the feature until consultations are completed to the government’s satisfaction. The username feature, which allows users to create unique identifiers for connecting on WhatsApp without sharing phone numbers, has raised concerns about scams and unwanted contact. According to WhatsApp’s FAQs, usernames will be optional, cannot be searched by strangers, and users can add an additional ‘username key’ for extra protection. The company has reserved well-known names, including those of public figures and government entities, to prevent impersonation. Users who link their Instagram or Facebook accounts can claim matching usernames to verify ownership. WhatsApp will monitor ‘blocks’ and ‘reports’ to take action against scammers. The platform has also cautioned against false claims about reserving popular usernames, emphasizing that only legitimate account owners can claim protected names.
WhatsApp’s FAQs provide key clarifications on the username feature, including the option to use a username generator if a desired username is not available. The company will display warnings for first-time outreach from unknown senders, including their country of origin. Users can prevent unwanted contact by adding a username key and choosing a unique username. Existing measures to prevent unwanted contact, such as warnings and the ability to block and report, remain in place.
