This week, as the United States gears up to celebrate its 250th anniversary of independence, American small business owners are calling on Congress to provide policy certainty, easier access to capital, and a stronger workforce. In Washington, business owners from various industries, including manufacturing, hospitality, and consumer products, conveyed this message during a House Small Business Committee hearing. The committee examined the role entrepreneurs have played in building the US economy over the past two-and-a-half centuries. Committee Chairman Roger Williams emphasized that America’s economic success has been driven by entrepreneurs since its founding, stating that the next chapter would depend on ensuring small businesses remain able to compete, innovate, and grow.
Witnesses, including Ohio restaurateur Adrian Adornetto and Philip Freeman, founder of North Carolina-based Murphy’s Naturals, identified financing and rising costs as significant obstacles facing entrepreneurs. Adornetto, whose family’s business has its roots in his grandparents’ immigration from Sicily, urged for a business environment where small businesses can survive and pass opportunities to the next generation. Freeman called for expanded lending programs, clearer regulations, and greater support for veteran entrepreneurs, emphasizing that the American dream is alive and thriving.
Other witnesses, such as Anne Shybunko-Moore, chief executive of New York defense manufacturer GSE Dynamics, and Maryland entrepreneur Veronica Kuhl, stressed the need for a predictable operating environment, investment incentives, and workforce development. Kuhl, who was born in the Dominican Republic, reflected on the opportunities available in the United States, urging Congress to reduce administrative burdens and support workforce development. As the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary, these business owners are seeking policy clarity to ensure the next generation can achieve the American dream.
