On Tuesday, Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced the state government’s ambitious goal to make Karnataka drug-free by 2028. He made this declaration while inaugurating the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking-2026 programme at the Kanteerava Indoor Stadium in Bengaluru. Shivakumar urged citizens, students, and youth to join hands with the government to eliminate the narcotics menace. He emphasized that the government’s message is clear: quit drugs and choose happiness.
Shivakumar appealed to parents not to hide their children’s drug addiction due to fear of social reputation. Instead, he encouraged them to counsel their children and cooperate with the police to identify the source of the drugs. This, he said, would help protect many young people. The Chief Minister also announced a new incentive, where the government will reward members of the public who provide credible information about drug consumption and trafficking.
Highlighting the government’s enforcement efforts, Shivakumar mentioned that narcotic substances worth Rs 89 crore had been destroyed over the past three years. He congratulated the police officers and personnel who worked to dismantle these drug networks. Shivakumar emphasized that a drug-free Karnataka is a collective commitment of every Kannadiga, and it requires a lifelong commitment to create a better society.
