Marilyn Martis, Director of the Mangaluru-based 'DEEDS' organization, recently addressed an awareness program at Alva's Pre-University College in Moodabidri, emphasizing every woman's fundamental right to work in a dignified, safe, and harassment-free environment. Her address focused on the critical role of the Protection of Women from Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act in safeguarding these rights.
Introduced in India in 2013, the POSH Act aims specifically to uphold the safety and dignity of women in professional settings. Martis stressed that preventing sexual harassment extends beyond an organization's responsibility; it requires the active awareness and participation of every single employee. She urged individuals not to succumb to fear or embarrassment if they experience harassment, but to report incidents immediately to the appropriate authorities.
Understanding the complaint mechanism, ensuring victim confidentiality, and recognizing the Internal Committee's (IC) responsibilities are crucial, Martis highlighted. She reminded attendees that forming an Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) is mandatory for both private and public organizations employing more than ten individuals. This committee serves as a vital pillar in fostering a secure atmosphere for women within the workplace.
Martis advocated for continuous employee education regarding the various forms of sexual harassment, the correct procedure for filing complaints, and the protections offered by the Act. College Principal Muhammad Sadaqat presided over the program, with Vice Principal Jancy P.N. also in attendance. Dr. Sulatha, Convener of the Internal Committee, extended a welcome to the gathering. The event commenced with an invocation song by college staff member Vidhyashree, and Lakshman, Lecturer in English, adeptly compered the proceedings.
