Udupi district has recorded a 50% rainfall deficit in June, causing concern among paddy farmers. Despite warnings from scientists about the El Nino phenomenon, the district received only 558 mm of rainfall from June 1 to 30, against the normal 1106 mm. This shortfall has affected the district’s main crop, paddy, and has led to a decrease in agricultural activities. Farmers are anxious as they have not been able to start their agricultural activities on time. However, the weather department has forecast good rainfall for the next 15 days, bringing some relief to the farmers.

The district’s agricultural department has advised farmers not to panic and to continue with their normal agricultural practices. They have also assured that there is no need to change their crop patterns or seeds. The department has suggested that farmers can use their regular seeds and do not need to make any changes to their agricultural practices. The weather department’s forecast of good rainfall for the next 15 days is expected to bring some relief to the farmers.

The rainfall deficit in Udupi district is not limited to June. The district has recorded a 44% rainfall deficit from January to June, with only 727 mm of rainfall recorded against the normal 1163 mm. The district’s different taluks have also recorded significant rainfall deficits, with Hebri taluk recording the highest deficit of 60%. The other taluks, including Brahmavar, Karkala, Kundapura, Udupi, Byndoor, and Kapu, have also recorded significant rainfall deficits.
