Kapu, Udupi district – On a bright morning, Mohammed Rayyan Riyaz, the district president of the Students’ Islamic Organisation (SIO), warned that mobile phones are weakening the thinking capacity of today’s youth. Speaking at a prize distribution ceremony for a speech and essay competition, he urged parents to keep mobile devices away from children.
The event took place at Mallar Urdu Composite High School as part of the “Revolutionary Light Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)” campaign organised by the Kapu branch of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind. Anwar Ali, the local president of the Kapu branch, presided over the gathering and reminded the audience that student life marks a decisive phase, demanding full concentration on studies.
Opening the programme, Mohammed Khidash recited verses from the Quran, followed by a welcome address from teacher Nadash Banu. Mohammed Iqbal, secretary of the Kapu branch, delivered the introductory speech, after which Vidya Raghavendra, headmistress of Maulana Azad English Medium High School, shared her thoughts on education.
During the award segment, cash prizes and certificates were handed to the winners and participants of the competition. Mohammed Sharif Sheikh, an activist, expressed gratitude in the vote of thanks, while Mohammed Ali Ibrahim acted as the compere. The dais also featured Veena, headmistress of Urdu High School, and Shanthalatha, headmistress of Urdu Primary School.
Riyaz stressed that reliance on smartphones replaces book reading, creating mental strain and leading to brain degeneration. He advised that children should not look at mobile phones at all, nor request them from their parents. The message resonated with educators and community leaders present, underscoring a collective call to protect the cognitive health of the region’s younger generation.
