Udupi hospital wins national award for green energy practices
CSI Lombard Memorial (Mission) Hospital in Udupi has earned the HELP Sustainability Excellence Award 2026 for Best Green Energy Efficiency Practices. The national-level honour was presented by the Health and Environment Leadership Platform (H.E.L.P.) during its international conference at Yashoda Hospitals, HITEC City, Hyderabad, on June 20, 2026.
Hospital director Dr. Sushil Jathanna received the award, which recognises institutions demonstrating measurable results in energy efficiency, renewable energy adoption and resource conservation. Judges evaluated entries on environmental impact, innovation, institutional commitment, scalability and governance.
The healthcare sector contributes an estimated 4.5 to 5 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. Many hospitals now align operations with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to reduce their environmental footprint.
This recognition follows the hospital's INSPIRE Green Hospital Project, launched in June 2024 under Dr. Jathanna's leadership. The initiative included solar power installations, carbon footprint assessment, energy and water conservation measures, strengthened waste segregation and management, campus greening and biodiversity conservation, and awareness campaigns on climate change and sustainability.
Founded in 1923 by Swiss missionary doctor Dr. Eva Lombard, CSI Lombard Memorial Hospital ranks among coastal Karnataka's earliest healthcare institutions. The NABH-accredited facility serves the region with major medical specialties.
Dr. Jathanna credited hospital staff, students and stakeholders for making the INSPIRE project successful. He also acknowledged support from the Lombard Foundation, Switzerland, and its advisors in achieving key sustainability milestones. 'This award is a proud recognition of our commitment to environmentally responsible healthcare,' he said, adding that the institution will continue strengthening its sustainability efforts.
H.E.L.P. is a knowledge-sharing platform established by the Public Health Foundation of India in collaboration with Health Care Without Harm. It serves as the India chapter of the Global Green and Healthy Hospitals network, which includes over 2,000 members representing more than 70,000 hospitals across 80 countries.
