Belthangady native Haji Abdul Latif Saheb will be honoured with the Bharat Pancharatna Award on 22 November at the Bharat Scouts and Guides Bhavan on Palace Road, Bengaluru, in a ceremony organised by the Suvarna Karnataka Karmika Vedike.

For more than four decades the veteran activist from Malady has devoted his life to education, social welfare and the upliftment of poor and backward sections of society. His efforts earned him the recognition of the Golden Karnataka Workers' Forum, which cited his “significant contributions to the field of education, social concern and the services rendered through various organisations” as the basis for the award.

Saheb founded and currently presides as honorary president of Jamiathul Falah Belthangady, an institution that has spearheaded numerous charitable projects. He also holds the position of working president of the development committees of Punjalakatte Government Pre‑University College in Malady and of the government schools in Sonandur, guiding infrastructure upgrades and curriculum enhancements.

Beyond formal education, he played a pivotal role in establishing the Malady Government ITI College, expanding vocational training opportunities for youth. His commitment to community service extends to his tenure as president of the Madanthyar Scouts and Guides organisation and as president of the Malady Kolpedabail Juma Masjid, where he has coordinated social programmes and relief drives.

The upcoming award ceremony will bring together representatives from various social and educational bodies, highlighting Saheb's lifelong dedication to the region. The Suvarna Karnataka Karmika Vedike expects the event to inspire further collaboration among NGOs and government agencies working toward inclusive development in coastal Karnataka.
