On July 8, 2026, in Mangaluru, MLA D Vedavyas Kamath criticized the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) for suspending applications at the Birth and Death Registration Unit, citing severe inconvenience to the public. The MCC had posted a notice stating that applications would not be accepted until July 29, as staff and officials were deployed for SIR duties. Kamath questioned the logic behind this move, asking if the state government assumed there would be no births or deaths in Mangaluru for the next month. He highlighted the difficulties this would cause, such as parents needing birth certificates for school admissions and individuals requiring certificates for passport applications.
Kamath noted that although the corporation resumed accepting applications on Tuesday, it was imposing conditions that would delay the issuance of certificates. He also criticized the Congress government for increasing the fee for birth and death certificates from ₹5 to ₹75. The MLA argued that if the corporation could stop accepting applications, it should also refrain from collecting taxes or accepting bribes from the public for the next month. Kamath pointed to the long queues outside the MCC office as evidence of the hardships faced by the public under the Congress-led administration.
Kamath further expressed concerns over delays in land conversion within Mangaluru city limits, which had been shifted from the Revenue Department to the Urban Development Authority (MUDA) without alternative arrangements. He stated that representations had been submitted to the Revenue Minister and the department’s secretary, and similar representations would be submitted to the Urban Development Minister and the department’s secretary. Kamath urged the state government to intervene and address the difficulties faced by citizens.
