Finance ministers, central bank governors, and prominent business executives from the world's largest economies have converged on Asheville, North Carolina, for a two-day G20 meeting that commenced on Monday. Hosted by the United States under its G20 presidency, the high-level gathering focuses on fostering global growth, addressing economic imbalances, managing sovereign debt, and strengthening resilient supply chains.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh arrived jointly after flying from Joint Base Andrews, with Bessent chairing the Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting. India's Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman reached Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport in neighbouring South Carolina on Sunday, greeted by India's Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Mohan Kwatra. Sitharaman is leading the Indian delegation through the discussions and associated deliberations.

US officials describe the ministerial's theme as returning the G20 "back to basics," prioritising robust and balanced economic expansion. The US agenda posits that enduring prosperity relies on abundant resources, resilient supply chains, market-driven innovation, private investment, and regulations that facilitate company growth and job creation. Asheville, a city in the Blue Ridge Mountains, was chosen to underscore western North Carolina's recovery following Hurricane Helene's devastation, portraying it as a 'comeback city' mirroring the global resilience sought.

This session marks the first instance of the G20 Finance Track directly engaging private-sector leaders, with approximately 20 business representatives participating. Executives from major financial institutions like JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs, alongside industrial giants such as 3M, Eli Lilly, Deere & Co., and Medtronic, are among the expected attendees. Sovereign debt restructuring, aiming for faster, more transparent, and predictable processes for both debtor nations and creditors, forms another significant discussion point, involving coordination through the Paris Club, G20 Common Framework, and the Global Sovereign Debt Roundtable. Challenges such as global imbalances and market-distorting practices, particularly industrial subsidies and export-oriented policies from countries like China, are also on the agenda. Financial literacy, wealth creation for households, and protection against financial fraud complete the US programme. Saudi Arabian Finance Minister Mohammed Al-Jadaan, Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama, and Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda are also confirmed participants, with nearly 300 journalists covering the event.
