On Sunday, the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Akademi, in collaboration with the Catholic Sabha, Bondel Unit, hosted a significant dual event at Bondel Church Hall in Mangalore. The gathering marked Teacher's Day celebrations alongside the 30th commemoration of the late Bishop Basil D'Souza.
Retired Archbishop of Mangalore Diocese, Wm. Dr. Elocious Paul de Souza, graced the occasion as chief guest. He emphasized that 'Information, structure and transformation are the three important ideas in life,' urging educators to fulfill their roles with 'love and selfless service' as a profound way to honor God. The event also saw the felicitation of Roshan Alexander Pinto, recognized for receiving the state-level best teacher award, highlighting excellence in the teaching profession.
Presiding over the function, Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Akademi President Joachim Stani Alwaris stressed the vital role of preserving the Konkani language. 'Only if we Konkanis speak Konkani to our children and God,' he asserted, 'our mother tongue can survive for thousands of years.' A poignant part of the program involved dignitaries paying tribute to the late Bishop Basil D'Souza by laying flowers on his portrait, marking the 30th anniversary of his passing. This was followed by an insightful conversation about Bishop D'Souza involving Prof. Steven Quadras, retired bishop Wm. Dr. Elocious Paul D'Souza, and Wm. Swa. Basil Vas.
Resource person Jessie Cutinha reinforced the noble calling of teaching, stating, 'Teaching is a mission, not just a job. A teacher plays many roles in a child's life as a mother, friend and mentor.' Revered Vm.Swa. Basil Vas of Saint Lawrence's Temple Bondel and Catholic Sabha Bondel unit president Sujay D'Silva attended as guests of honour. Wilfred Alvaris skillfully hosted the entire program, ensuring its smooth execution.
