Kundapur: A programme aimed at introducing high school students to the life and work of Dr. Shivaram Karanta unfolded at Government High School in Basrur. Titled 'Karantaru Karantaru' and organised under the banner of Rangavalli, the event was a collaborative effort of the Department of Kannada and Culture, the Dr. Shivram Karanta Trust Udupi District, and the school itself.
Dr. Gananath Shetty, chairman of the Dr. Shivram Karanta Trust, presided over the gathering. He stressed the need to familiarise young minds with Karanta's multifaceted contributions. 'He worked across every field and gave immensely to society. The youth must know his greatness,' Dr. Shetty said.
School head teacher Manjula G.S. inaugurated the programme. She screened the film 'Chomana Dudi' for students and explained why it remains relevant today. Mamata Kandlur, a Kannada lecturer at Sri Basrur Sharada College, served as the resource person. She urged students to cultivate a reading habit. 'Books open new worlds. Read widely,' she advised.
Dr. Chetan Shetty Kovadi, a trust member, delivered the welcome address. Teacher Shekhara Pujari added a creative touch by characterising Bharati — the personification of India — as a tree, offering a symbolic salute through his words.
The programme drew students and faculty alike into a deeper appreciation of Karanta's literary and cultural footprint. Organisers expressed hope that such initiatives would keep his legacy alive among younger generations.
