Thoothukudi's fishing community saw a renewed flurry of activity on Saturday as fishermen ventured back into the sea, concluding a six-day period of enforced idleness. Approximately 260 mechanised boats departed from the Thoothukudi fishing harbour, marking the resumption of operations halted by warnings of stormy weather along the Tamil Nadu coast.

The protracted pause, prompted by forecasts of rough seas and adverse weather conditions, had kept the fleet berthed and crews ashore since the beginning of the week. Restrictions, imposed to safeguard fishermen, were eased on Saturday morning, allowing the vital industry to restart.

For nearly a week, livelihoods for countless fishing families and associated workers were interrupted. The shutdown affected not only those directly aboard the boats but also individuals reliant on the broader fishing ecosystem, leaving many without their usual income. The departure of the boats brought a palpable sense of relief across the harbour, offering the prospect of work resuming.

Fishermen expressed optimism about their first trip post-suspension, hoping for a substantial catch to compensate for the lost days. While the immediate expectation revolves around favourable hauls, the true outcome will only become clear upon the boats' return to the harbour.

Saturday's restart underscored the profound dependence of coastal households and allied workers on consistent access to the sea. The community now eagerly awaits the returning vessels and the volume of fish they bring ashore, with hopes centred on a productive and rewarding fishing season after the unexpected break.
