Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Tuesday warned information technology companies in Bengaluru that any deliberate exclusion of Kannada‑speaking candidates could trigger government action. The statement came after a social‑media video sparked a debate about possible discrimination in hiring practices.

In a post on X, the CM said complaints that candidates listing Kannada as their mother tongue face reduced chances of recruitment are “unfortunate” and that the administration will treat the matter seriously. He emphasized that Kannadigas form the backbone of the state and that their rights, dignity and employment opportunities must not be ignored.

The controversy began when a young woman from Bengaluru uploaded a video alleging that IT firms favour applicants from other linguistic backgrounds, especially Telugu and Tamil speakers. According to her, mentioning Kannada on a résumé can lower the likelihood of being shortlisted. She also claimed that several companies have stopped conducting campus drives at local colleges, opting instead to hire candidates from outside Karnataka at lower salaries.

Kannada organisations quickly voiced concern, arguing that local youth are being sidelined in their own capital, which is recognised worldwide as a technology hub. While the video has not provided concrete evidence of systematic bias, the allegations have revived discussions about the balance between attracting national talent and protecting local employment.

Shivakumar assured that the government will investigate any proven instances of deliberate neglect. He added that Bengaluru’s reputation as a global tech centre will not be compromised, but the state will not tolerate policies that undermine the prospects of its own people.

Industry bodies and private employers are now expected to review recruitment procedures to ensure fairness, as the state signals its readiness to intervene if necessary.
