Dr. Arun Kumar Shetty, commissioner (in-charge) of Pilikula Development Authority, announced on Oct 25 that the beloved fishing program will resume at Pilikula Nisargadhama’s Lake Garden in Mangalore.

The declaration came during the annual Matsya Mela, a fair designed to showcase coastal culture and the region’s fishing heritage. In previous editions, thousands of tourists flocked to watch the traditional competition.

Last year skilled anglers from Shivamogga released and captured roughly 1,200 kg of freshwater species such as Rohu, Catla and Tilapia. Of this, 900 kg were sold to the public at Rs 160 per kilogram, and about 20,000 fingerlings were introduced into the pond, many now weighing seven to eight kilograms.

This time the target has been raised to 1,500 kg of fish. Organisers will display live catches, allowing visitors to buy them on the spot. To avoid the shortages experienced previously, a token system will regulate sales and ensure fair access for all.

Local MLA Umanath Kotian inaugurated the program by releasing additional fingerlings and filling baskets with the morning net haul. He emphasized that the stock is pure and free from any adulteration.

Officials expect the event to boost tourism and reinforce fishing as a cornerstone livelihood for the coastal community. With larger catches and a streamlined sales process, the Matsya Mela aims to attract even more visitors to Pilikula in the months ahead.
