Auckland, New Zealand – The New Zealand Kannada Koota (NZKK), under the leadership of Kulai, Mangaluru native Suhas Shanbhogue, recently brought Karnataka's vibrant cultural traditions to an international audience. Their four-minute presentation captivated more than 10,000 members of the Indian diaspora at Spark Arena during a grand community event coinciding with the Indian Prime Minister's historic visit to New Zealand.

Titled “Kishkindha to Ayodhya: From Rama to Ram Lalla,” the performance skillfully depicted Karnataka's profound contributions to Indian culture and spirituality. It commenced with the dynamic Yakshagana, illustrating scenes from the Ramayana, including Lord Rama's alliance with Sugreeva. The narrative then unfolded through dramatic stage sequences, tracing the journey from Kishkindha—believed to be modern-day Hampi—to the consecration of Ram Lalla in Ayodhya.

The presentation seamlessly transitioned into a display of Karnataka's diverse folk arts, featuring the powerful Veeragase, the devotional Jogati Nritya, the rhythmic Kamsale, and the spirited Kodava dance. The spectacle culminated with the energetic Chende Suttu, drawing enthusiastic applause from the audience. A significant highlight was the finale, which honoured renowned Karnataka sculptor Arun Yogiraj, creator of the Ram Lalla idol now enshrined in the Ayodhya Ram Mandir, underscoring the state's enduring legacy.

Established in 1994, NZKK operates as a non-profit organisation dedicated to preserving Kannada language and traditions for Kannadigas in New Zealand. Over three decades, it has fostered a thriving community of approximately 150 active families. President Suhas Shanbhogue guides the Koota in organising annual events like Kannada Rajyotsava, Ugadi, Ganesh Chaturthi, and Independence Day celebrations, alongside various cultural and literary programmes. The organisation actively connects younger generations with their heritage while enriching New Zealand's multicultural fabric. The Spark Arena performance received widespread appreciation, affirming Karnataka's distinct cultural presence on the global stage.
