National Security Advisor Ajit Doval arrived in Beijing for the latest round of India-China Special Representatives' talks, prompting the Congress party to sharply question the government's handling of the long-standing boundary dispute on Monday from New Delhi.
Pawan Khera, a Congress spokesperson and Member of Parliament, asserted that the mechanism, originally established during Atal Bihari Vajpayee's premiership for 'border resolution,' has significantly devolved into mere 'border management.' Khera highlighted this shift, stating, 'The Special Representative mechanism created during Atal Bihari Vajpayee's tenure was meant for border resolution. Notice the word carefully: 'resolution.' But over time, it has been reduced to border management- not solving the dispute, but merely managing it.'
Khera further criticised the government's response to the 2020 India-China military standoff. He referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement from June 19, 2020, claiming no territorial intrusion. According to Khera, this statement inadvertently conveyed to China and the world that Indian troops had entered Chinese territory, leading to the Galwan martyrdom. He also accused the administration of 'bowing down on Ladakh' and noted concerns in Arunachal, where China's presence is allegedly downplayed by 'hoisting flag at district headquarters.'
Meanwhile, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, BJP MLA Ram Kadam defended the government's foreign policy. Kadam underscored Prime Minister Modi's extensive global engagements over the past 12 years, citing visits to numerous nations previously unvisited by an Indian Prime Minister. He emphasized these efforts to foster strong international relations. Kadam also pointed to India's economic ascent, from the world's 11th-largest economy in 2014 to its current fourth position, projecting it would soon become the third-largest, solidifying India's image as a 'Vishwaguru.'
The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed NSA Doval, India's Special Representative on the India-China Boundary Question, is on a two-day visit at the invitation of Chinese Foreign Minister and Politburo member Wang Yi. Doval and Wang Yi, China's Special Representative, will convene the 25th round of talks on August 25. During his stay, Doval is also scheduled to meet Chinese Vice President Han Zheng. Discussions are anticipated to focus on resolving the boundary question and ensuring peace and stability along the India-China border.
