On Tuesday, Jharkhand assembly proceedings came to a close a day earlier than scheduled, as chaos erupted over student protests against alleged recruitment examination irregularities. In Ranchi, BJP MLAs sparked the unrest, objecting to the police baton charge on protesting students. Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahato was forced to adjourn the House twice, first until noon and then until 2 pm, due to the ruckus. As the House resumed, legislators from both ruling and opposition parties entered the well, raising slogans against each other.
Amid the uproar, Chief Minister Hemant Soren stated that a CID probe into the alleged irregularities was ongoing and claimed that agitating students had accepted the government’s proposed reform measures. Soren emphasized the government’s intention to reform the examination system and investigate recruitment test irregularities. Following the CM’s brief speech, the Speaker adjourned the House sine die, citing a heavy heart and pain. Earlier, at 11 am, BJP MLAs began demonstrating against the police action on students protesting the alleged irregularities. Congress MLA Pradip Yadav raised concerns about the students’ protest, alleging that BJP-backed miscreants had indulged in violence during the demonstration.
Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi sought Soren’s response on the alleged atrocities against students, including baton charges and tear gas shells. The protests, which started on July 25, demand transparency in recruitment examinations and reforms in the JPSC and JSSC. The BJP alleged that students were treated like criminals during the protest march, with several demonstrators injured. The police reported 14 injured personnel during the clashes. The House’s adjournment came a day before its scheduled end on August 12.
