New Delhi: Devina Gahlot, daughter of BJP MLA Kailash Gahlot, secured the top rank in the Common University Entrance Test (CUET-UG) — a result she initially struggled to believe. “I kept checking the application number because I could not believe that I had topped in the entire country,” she said. While confident about her performance, an all-India first place was not something she had expected.
The Bijwasan MLA’s daughter credited her family and teachers for never pressuring her during preparation. She emphasised that discipline and consistency mattered more than marathon study sessions. “I studied every subject every day. I never focused only on one thing while leaving everything else. I revised regularly and solved a lot of previous years’ question papers,” she explained.
Devina recalled the early days after board exams as particularly tough. “When I started preparing for CUET right after the board exams, I had no idea what to study or where to study from. At times, I felt I might not be able to do it because I was not used to this kind of pressure that could determine my future,” she said. Her parents’ encouragement helped her navigate those uncertain moments.
An avid reader and writer, Devina plans to pursue English Honours, with journalism as a possible career path. She has not ruled out politics. “Ever since childhood, I have seen my father as an MLA and as a minister. I have seen how many people have been helped through this profession,” she said. “So there is interest, but let’s see where life takes me.”
Kailash Gahlot, a former transport minister, expressed delight at his daughter’s achievement. “We never forced her. Both our daughters have done very well. I would often ask her whether she was studying seriously, and her standard reply was always, ‘Dad, it will be done’,” he said, adding that the credit goes to her hard work, her mother, teachers, and DPS Vasant Kunj.
The National Testing Agency announced CUET-UG results on Tuesday. Twenty-two candidates scored 100 percentile in three subjects, while 180 achieved the same in two subjects.
