On a recent episode of CBS News’ "Face the Nation", National Institutes of Health Director Dr Jay Bhattacharya urged American parents to vaccinate their children, citing the country’s highest measles caseload in 35 years. Dr Bhattacharya, who is also temporarily leading the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, emphasized the importance of standard childhood vaccines, including those protecting against measles, diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis. He encouraged parents to vaccinate their kids, stating that it is the best way to protect them from preventable diseases. Dr Bhattacharya, a parent himself, has vaccinated his own children and believes that vaccination is crucial for preventing the spread of diseases. He also encouraged families to send their children back to school, as fears about exposure should not keep them out of classrooms.
CBS anchor Margaret Brennan reported that measles cases have reached their highest level in 35 years, with only 10 states reaching the 95 percent vaccination threshold necessary for preventing sustained transmission. Dr Bhattacharya noted that outbreaks in several states, including South Carolina, Texas, Arizona, and Utah, have been addressed. He linked declining vaccination rates to a broader loss of faith in public health authorities following the COVID-19 pandemic and emphasized the need to rebuild trust. Dr Bhattacharya also discussed the rise in autism diagnoses, stating that NIH-supported researchers are examining possible reasons and that early results are expected soon.
The NIH director addressed various outbreaks involving the US food supply, including a cyclospora outbreak associated with iceberg lettuce from Mexico. He advised consumers to wash their lettuce carefully, discard the outer leaves, or cook their vegetables to minimize the risk of contamination. With the US facing its highest measles caseload in 35 years, Dr Bhattacharya’s message to parents is clear: vaccinate your children to protect them from preventable diseases.
