On Sunday, Kolkata officials announced that TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee has been booked following a complaint from a woman who lost her leg after receiving treatment for knee pain at a Sebaashray camp. The camp is a healthcare outreach initiative launched by Banerjee in West Bengal a few months ago. The woman, Malati Biswas, attended the health camp on February 8 with a complaint of chronic knee pain due to osteoarthritis and was prescribed medicines by a medical examiner who did not reveal his full name or medical registration number. However, her condition deteriorated, and she was forced to approach a second Sebaashray camp, where doctors allegedly demanded a large sum of money for treatment. After declining to pay, Biswas was referred to a government hospital, where she underwent a total knee replacement surgery on April 25. Unfortunately, she developed an acute post-operative vascular complication in her right leg, resulting in an above-knee amputation on May 27. State health minister Sharadwat Mukhopadhyay has intervened in the controversy, speaking to the complainant and asking her family members to visit Swasthya Bhawan on Monday for a detailed review of the case. At least two FIRs have already been filed against Banerjee in connection with alleged irregularities in Sebaashray health camps, and a third FIR was registered after Biswas's husband complained to the police on July 9. The police are currently investigating the matter, and an official at the Rabindranagar police station confirmed that an FIR had been registered against Banerjee and some others based on the complaint.
