On June 2, in Mangalore, the Dakshina Kannada unit of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) voiced concerns over the state government’s plan to hand over government hospitals to private medical colleges. AAP state vice-president Vivekananda Salins addressed a press conference at the city’s press hall, expressing doubts about the government’s intentions regarding public healthcare. Former health minister Dinesh Gundurao’s earlier statement and the current health minister’s support for it have raised questions. Most government hospitals in the state are in poor condition and require upgrades to provide super specialty treatments and complex surgeries. The lack of infrastructure forces poor patients to seek minimal health services elsewhere.
Instead of strengthening the public health system, the government plans to sign a memorandum of understanding to hand over these assets to private institutions. However, the draft agreement has not been made public, leaving unclear rules and regulations. Vivekananda Salins emphasized the government’s responsibility to provide high-quality, free healthcare facilities and emergency medical facilities to road accident victims. The AAP demands an open discussion on this issue and full public disclosure before finalizing any agreement. Udupi District President S.R. Lobo, D.K. District Organizing Secretary SL Pinto, and other district leaders were present at the press conference.
