On Thursday, Senior BJP leader and Leader of Opposition R. Ashoka urged the Karnataka government to take immediate action to tackle the emerging drought situation. In a letter to Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, Ashoka called for the declaration of drought in over 150 taluks, a scientific crop loss survey, and an emergency plan to mitigate the impact on farmers and rural communities. The state is facing an alarming rainfall deficit, with inadequate southwest monsoon affecting sowing operations and putting standing crops at risk of drying up. Ashoka alleged that the Congress government has failed to respond adequately to the situation, with most district-in-charge ministers not visiting the affected areas. The BJP leader warned that any delay in declaring drought-hit areas would postpone crop loss assessments and compensation to farmers. He sought a series of immediate measures, including district-wise assessment of drought conditions, emergency action plans, and expedited implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act. Ashoka also demanded a scientific survey of crop losses, interim relief for affected farmers, and the appointment of a full-time Agriculture Minister. The Opposition leader emphasized that drought is a challenge affecting the entire state and urged the government to prioritize public interest over politics.
