On Sunday, June 28, climate activist Sonam Wangchuk launched a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, joining the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) protest. The demonstration demands Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation due to alleged irregularities in examinations. Before starting his fast, Wangchuk, accompanied by CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, visited Rajghat to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. The protest began with a two-minute silence, followed by Wangchuk’s hunger strike, which drew hundreds of protesters, mostly youth and students. Several farmer leaders also attended the protest, despite some being placed under house arrest. Wangchuk explained that education has been a long-standing concern for him, and he could not ignore the issues raised by young people. He emphasized the importance of using education to build children’s lives and guide the nation. Wangchuk also highlighted the significance of protecting the Himalayas, as billions of people depend on water from the region. He praised the protesters, including those observing hunger strikes, and appealed for a community-wide hunger strike. The protest has become a platform for addressing various grievances related to students and educational institutions.
