On August 28, Shraddha Kapoor will star as Vithabai Narayangaonkar in the biopic Eetha, directed by Laxman Utekar. The film tells the story of Vithabai, a Tamasha legend and Lavani dancer from Pandharpur, who introduced Maharashtra’s folk arts to the world. However, the movie’s title has sparked controversy, with the Nationalist Congress Party’s Film and Cultural Department and Vithabai’s family expressing displeasure. They believe the title Eetha does not do justice to Vithabai’s legacy. The NCP argues that Vithabai represents more than just folk art, she is the face of Tamasha and Lavani, and the heart of Maharashtra’s cultural history. Babasaheb Patil, head of the NCP in Maharashtra, emphasized that the party owes Vithabai utmost respect, dignity, and grace. Vithabai’s family, including her sons Kailash and Rajesh, and her grandson Mohit, have publicly backed the NCP’s stand, stating that the title should bear her name. Vithabai was a renowned performer who won the President’s Award twice, in 1957 and 1990, for her dedication to the performing arts. The film’s teaser has also generated buzz, showcasing a dramatic episode from Vithabai’s life, with Shraddha Kapoor performing on stage while heavily pregnant. The filmmakers shot in various locations across Mumbai, Solapur, Satara, Nashik, and more, to ensure authenticity. The film features Randeep Hooda and Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub, and is produced by Maddock Films. Despite the controversy, fans have been praising Shraddha’s look in the movie, calling it one of her most impressive performances yet. The film’s promotional campaign is in full swing, but the silence from Maddock Films and Laxman Utekar regarding the title controversy has put them in a tricky position.
