Annamalai quits BJP, rejects Rajinikanth offer, vows to launch independent political movement in Tamil Nadu

Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai stepped down from the primary membership of the Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday, citing an irreconcilable gap between his vision for Tamil Nadu politics and the position held by the party's central leadership. The resignation, announced from Chennai, marks a significant shift in the state's political landscape.

Annamalai had spent 18 months attempting to bridge the divide. Repeated discussions with the BJP's top brass failed to produce any consensus, he said, and he chose to exit rather than remain a source of friction within the organisation. "My views on Tamil Nadu were not compatible with the BJP leadership's position," he wrote in his resignation letter, adding that he did not want to be a burden or cause trouble to the party.

Despite walking away, Annamalai made a point of expressing continued respect for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He also acknowledged the trust, opportunity and support the party extended to him throughout his political career — a gesture that signals he intends no personal animosity toward the organisation he is leaving behind.

The resignation quickly drew attention from an unexpected direction. Veteran actor Rajinikanth personally reached out to Annamalai and requested him to join his camp. Annamalai turned the offer down flat. Joining any existing party, he said, is not something he intends to do.

Instead, Annamalai has set his sights on building something from the ground up. He announced plans to launch a new political movement aimed at delivering meaningful change to Tamil Nadu's political order. "I am ready to fight alone if necessary to build an independent political path," he declared, framing his next chapter as a solo mission rather than a coalition exercise.

Whether this new movement gains traction in a state dominated by Dravidian parties remains to be seen. For now, Annamalai's departure from BJP and his refusal of the Rajinikanth invitation position him as a genuinely independent actor in Tamil Nadu politics — one who appears determined to chart his own course.
